GRB 970228 Optical Counterpart Images

Keck images of the field of GRB 970228, obtained on 12 Sep 97 UT (S.R. Kulkarni, S.G. Djorgovski, R. Goodrich, D. Frail, H. Spinrad, D. Stern, A. Dey, and A. Bunker).

Images were obtained in the R band, with the total integration of 600 sec.

Host galaxy of the burst optical counterpart (originally detected by van Paradijs et al.) is clearly detected. Apparently it did not fade or move since March 1997. Assuming the magnitude of R = 22.4 for the star 2.7 arcsec W from the object (Metzger et al., IAUC 6588), the object has a magnitude R = 25.8 +- 0.3, in agreement with the recent measurement from Palomar (Djorgovski et al., IAUC 6732). Note a hint of the point source attached to the nebulosity, just as in the HST images obtained in April 1997.
